THE MANAGER

"Without Mister Epstein there would have been no Beatles",says Paul McCartney in a 1992 BBC interview.Known as the manager of the Beatles and their mentor,Brian is one of the most wealthiest figures in rock music. While the Beatles were enjoying their worldwide success,he busied himself managing other British artists such as rock groups Gerry and The Pacemakers,Freddie and the Dreamers and also Priscilla White, the cloakroom attendant at the Cavern, became a star in the Epstein firmament when he renamed her Cilla Black.

Although generally not in a laughing frame of mind, depression plagued him all day due to constant pressures and worries over his boys and girls which eventually led him to become addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. After the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966,Brian attempted suicide, stricken by the emptiness of the future. His projects after the Beatles "retired" from touring were mixed and he took little pleasure in them.Eventually he entered a clinic where his condition was diagnosed as a mixture of exhaustion, depression and insomnia. The pessimism remained even after he left the clinic. And in August 1967,he died of an overdose on sleeping pills.
